School of Communications’ Reel Dreams Film Competition is back for their 3rd edition! The Final Event will not take place at the Main Theatre this year, but at their TV Studio due to lack of audience numbers in the previous editions. The competition has also a new coordinator, Daniel Nettleton, who previously won 2nd place in the first edition. The website is revamped again adding more of a web 2.0 feel. No word on the host will be, but our hunch guess would be Mark Palidini and possibly another person. Judges are still not confirmed, but we hope Ben Stein could do it! Here’s the press release from Christian Newswire:

Regent University’s Reel Dreams Film Competition is back and looking to showcase fresh, new, and talented filmmakers who aspire to make the world a better place through redemptive storytelling.

Sponsored by Regent’s School of Communication & the Arts, Reel Dreams is an annual competition that gives independent filmmakers the opportunity to have their redemptive films reviewed by industry professionals, showcase their work on the Internet and compete for scholarships.

Additional information about this year’s competition can be found on the competition website.

“The mission of the Reel Dreams Film Competition is to empower aspiring film artists to use their talents and abilities to bring creative, redemptive films to the entertainment industry,” explains Michael Patrick, dean of Regent’s School of Communication & the Arts.

Redemptive films are those whose stories portray a carefully-crafted protagonist facing a moral dilemma that leads to good or bad consequences. Through grippingly overt or subtle stories, these films convey positive messages of hope, love and redemption that transform the minds of audiences worldwide.

Films are required to be between three and five minutes in length. Additional rules and submission information can be found on the Reel Dreams website. The submission period for films opens on Jan. 4 and runs until Mar. 9.

Once films are submitted, they will enter the first of three rounds of judging. Initial entries will be narrowed down to the top 25. Those 25 films will then be narrowed down to seven. The top seven finalists will receive an all-expense paid weekend in Virginia Beach, VA for the final event, April 17, 2010, where the grand prize winner will be announced.

Regent University’s School of Communication and the Arts offers degrees in Cinema-Television, Journalism, Theatre, Digital Media, Animation and Communication Studies. Students have won more than 230 awards for their films, publications and theatre performances. On-campus and online degrees are available. Further information can be found at www.regent.edu/communication.

They have given him
about $40,000 according to the Washington Post:

“Republican gubernatorial nominee Bob McDonnell received a trio of last-minute donations totaling $40,000 from religious broadcaster Pat Robertson, his son and daughter-in-law.
Robertson contributed $25,000 on Oct. 20, according to the Virginia Public Access Project, a nonpartisan tracker of money in politics. His son, Tim, donated $5,000 Friday for in-kind services (listed as catering) and his wife, Lisa, donated $10,000 to McDonnell today.

McDonnell said in an interview earlier this year that he and Robertson only speak a couple times a year. But Robertson has become one of his biggest donors.
Robertson donated $35,000 to his campaign for governor (the other $10,000 donation was in December 2008) and $66,000 to his race for attorney general, according to VPAP.
Tim Robertson donated $24,000 to McDonnell’s campaign for governor in 2008 and 2009, but nothing since April until the recent donation. He had previously donated $10,000 to his campaign for attorney general and $5,000 to his campaign for House of Delegates.
Another son, Gordon Robertson, contributed $500 to McDonnell’s run for attorney general.”

The festival has become one of the leading film festivals worldwide for family friendly films. Dr. Crouch will be receiving the award for his years of meritorious service to Christian broadcasting and filmmaking.

The Redemptive Film Festival, has attracted hundreds of entries from some 28 countries worldwide and has created waves throughout the international film community. The Virginia Beach based festival is aimed at providing a forum for filmmakers (professionals or students), to showcase and be rewarded for their work on themes that depict the redemptive purposes of God, either through human beings or supernatural occurrences. All proceeds from the grand awards ceremony will be donated to helping to free and empower the victims of modern day slavery. There are some 27 million slaves in the world today.

According to Dr. Chris Cunningham, Festival Director, “Dr. Paul Crouch was selected by the nominating committee because of his tireless efforts to tell the greatest redemptive story ever, primarily through Christian broadcasting, but also through his role as Executive Producer of several high quality films.” TBN offers 24 hours of commercial-free inspirational programming that appeal to people in a wide variety of Protestant, Catholic and Messianic Jewish denominations. TBN is a recognized leader in the production of major Christian movies. TBN’s cinematic achievements include: “The Revolutionary” and “The Revolutionary II,” based on the life of Jesus; “The Emissary,” a film on the life of the apostle Paul; “The Omega Code”; “Carman: The Champion”; “Megiddo”; and “Time Changer.”

The Redemptive Film Festival is produced by FireWorks International, a Virginia based Christian media production company and will commence on Friday, October 16, with screening of some of the winning films at noon in Screening Rooms A and B of the Regent University School of Communication. The screenings are free to the public. The Grand Awards Ceremony and screening will be held the following day, Saturday, October 17, at 5:00 P.M. in the Main Auditorium, followed by a reception. Tickets for the Grand Awards Ceremony/Screening of top films ($10) are available online at boxoffice@regent.edu or by calling (757) 226-4245.

For the purposes of this competition, a redemptive film is any film whose main purpose is to depict the act of redeeming, rescuing, or delivering any person from a state of crisis or helplessness. Entries were judged by a panel of professionals with years of experience in many aspects of cinema and television. The films were judged in three categories: Student, Professional and “Distinctly Gospel,” a new film category created by the Redemptive Film Festival. Winners include comedy shorts, short and full length narratives, documentaries, music videos and animation. The show promises to bring good, clean family fun, free of indecent language, gratuitous violence, sex or nudity to Hampton Roads.

If you’d like more information about this festival, or to schedule an interview with the Festival Director, please call Dr. Chris Cunningham at 757-966-0312 or email Dr. Chris at redemptiverfilms@cox.net.
